It’s not easy, after a hundred successive performances, to act as though you are hearing the news of Ophelia’s death for the first time. It turns out there’s a particular state of mind you need to be in; scientists not only know exactly what this state is but can train you to achieve it.
The system is quite brilliant: you’re hooked up to electrodes, and as you control your brainwaves, the lights on the stage in front of you get brighter and darker, and the sounds get louder and quieter. Eventually they reach the ideal intensity and volume, signalling that you are in full “listening” mode. Ingenious.
